BLUE HILL – Clarence Vernon Gordon, 79, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, after a long illness. He was born in Dexter, Aug. 7, 1925, the son of Frank and Sarah (Shortt) Gordon. Clarence attended George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 where he served over seas on the ocean going tug, U.S.S. Hop. After being discharged from the Navy, Clarence worked in a saw mill in Ellsworth Falls. He was a long-time law officer starting as a constable for the town of Blue Hill followed by a long career as a Hancock County deputy sheriff under Sheriff Merritt Fitch. Clarence was a well- loved and much respected officer both by the community he served and the people he had contact with. After retiring from the sheriff’s office, Clarence took the job of caretaker which his father retired from and went on to work many happy years on Parker Point, retiring in 1995. Clarence had many hobbies that kept him busy at all times, his gold wing motorcycle that brought him many hours of pleasure, his snowmobiles of which he had many, golfing with anyone he thought would give him a good game or just a good laugh and his large family which turned out to be his biggest and best hobby. He really enjoyed hunting white tailed deer and was at his best in the outdoors enjoying nature. He loved his cars and collected them with passion, but most of all he will be remembered for his sense of humor, his honesty and the great love for family and many, many friends. Clarence was a good example and influence on his family at all times. He was a member of the Duffy-Wescott Post 85, I00F and Sons of the American Legion Auxiliary. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maurice (Duren) Gordon; four children, Suzanne Chaney and husband, Bob, of Oklahoma, Timothy, Cindy Ramsdell and husband, Allen, and Dan and his wife, Diane, all of Blue Hill; five grandchildren, Patrick Allen of Lebanon, Pa., Scarlett Ramsdell of Blue Hill, Tiffany Ramsdell of Portland, Lynne-Dall Ramsdell of Fort Lauderdale, and Jared Gordon of Blue Hill; one great-grandson, Jaden Rockwell of Blue Hill; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, a special grandchild, Tyson Veysey of Belfast; five brothers, Shirley, Johnny, Wilfred, Richard and Edward Gordon. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at the Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 141 South St., Blue Hill. Funeral services will be held at the Blue Hill Congregational United Church of Christ at 11 a.m. Oct. 29, 2004. Interment will be at Seaside Cemetery.
