CHARLOTTE – Clayton Lee Sawyer, 83, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, after a prolonged illness. Clayton was born Nov. 17, 1920, the seventh of Edward L. and Lora (Brown) Sawyer’s 12 children. Clayton centered his life around family, God and country. Nine weeks after his wedding to Thursa, he went to Europe to serve in the Army during World War II. Following the war, he and Thursa devoted themselves to building a family and serving the Lord. Clayton was a charter member of the Charlotte Baptist Church, and served as a deacon for many years. He served for 29 years on the committee of Child Evangelism Fellowship, an organization devoted to children’s ministries worldwide. As members of the American Sunday School Union, Clayton and Thursa helped start a number Sunday Schools in Maine. He worked several years as a deputy sheriff on the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, and for the Acadia National Park Service at St. Croix Island. He also made many lasting friendships during his years as caretaker of several camps on Meddybemps Lake. Clayton was predeceased by brothers, Cecil, Ellis, Alton, James and Roy; sisters, Essie Carter and Myrtle James; and an infant sister. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thursa (Cousins) Sawyer; sons, Tom and wife, Doreen, and John and wife, Sookie; daughter-in-law, Sandie; four grandsons, Tommy, Steven and wife, Jessica, Eddie and girlfriend, Tanya, and Greg; a granddaughter, Amy; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kaci, Kalila, Josie, Jeorge and Stewart Sawyer; great-stepgrand-children, Samantha and Dillon Leighton; brother, Ken and wife, Ruth; sister, Florence Hatton and Eleanor Baker and husband, Bill; sister-in-law, Rae Sawyer; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones; and two special little girls who call him “Papa”, Jessica and Kayli. Visiting hours will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Scott-Wilson Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, at the Charlotte Baptist Church on Ayers Junction Road, in Charlotte. Pastor William Hunt will officiate.
