HARTLAND – Clayton Longfellow Smith Jr., 82, went home to be with the Lord, March 9, 2007, surrounded by his loving family. Clayton was born Feb. 27, 1925, in Skowhegan. He was the son of Clayton L. Smith Sr. and Edith (Day) Adams Smith. Clayton worked at Irving Tanning Co., Hartland, retiring 20 years ago. An avid reader, he enjoyed many World War II books and was a history buff for sure. Clayton loved to travel both in the U. S., as well as Canada. Clayton loved his pets and loved music, he was very gifted. He played in a country band; his specialties were, Hawaiian steel guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, organ, accordion, keyboard, harmonica, spoons and tried to pick a little banjo. He also sang beautifully. A song I will always remember is “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles.” He greatly enjoyed family and friend gatherings, where there was good music, good food, drink and happy times. Everything Clayton did was bubbly, even his dancing. Clayton is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lillian M. (Kimball) Lancaster Smith; four children, Gladys (Smith) Lyons Chevry and Judy (Lancaster) Bubar Turner of Hartland, Albert Lancaster of Palmyra and Dawn (Lombard) Giles of Florida; two brothers, Rex Smith Sr. of Hartland and Ray Smith of Athens; eight sisters, Grace Jackson of Wallingford, Conn., Helen Ivers of Bremington Wash., Lynette Graham of California, Edith (Jackie) Munn of Palmyra, Virginia Runnells of Rochester N.H., Catherine Munn of Hartland, Jeanette Goodfield of Lebanon and Eleanor Chambers of Rochester, N.H.; special sister-in-law, Gladys Smith Bedard of Rochester N.H.; all of their surviving spouses, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, many special nieces and nephews; his niece, Marie; and great-niece, Stacie, who also aided with companionship and care. Predeceased by his parents; an ex-wife, Betty (Jones) Smith Knight Filmore; a half brother, Ralph Adams; brother, Dana Smith; sisters-in-law, Teresa Smith, Jeanette Smith; brothers-in-law, Onal Munn, Rich Goodfield, Rob Runnells; a grandson, Harry Lancaster; and a great-granddaughter, Kathy. There will be a celebration of his life 2 p.m. March 24, at the Church of Nazarene, Pittsfield, with Clayton’s new found friend, Pastor Phil. Committal will be in the spring in Dexter.
