EAST MACHIAS – Clayton W. Vose, 88, died Dec. 12, 2005, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Bangor after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Marshfield, the son of the late Frederick and Emily (Johnson) Vose. Clayton grew up on a farm in Marshfield where he developed a love for horses and Sulkey racing. He graduated from Washington Academy. Clayton served as a guard in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany during the Nuremberg Trials. Clayton married Irma Roberts in 1938. He worked for 40 years as a manager of a sardine packing company in Machiasport. He loved working outdoors doing gardening, mowing and other activities. Clayton was a member of the Machias Valley Baptist Church where he served as a trustee. Clayton was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Irma Vose; children, Virginia Conard and husband, Ed, of Wilmington, Del., Donald Vose and wife, Linda, of Whiting and Mary Payson and husband, Andy, of Union; grandchildren, Stephanie, Tommy, Chuck, Emily and Matt; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. The family would like to especially thank the nursing staff at the Veterans’ Home in Bangor for their exceptional loving care that they gave to Clayton in the last eight months. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, with Pastor George Henderson and Elder Harry Lingley officiating at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. A private burial will take place. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Hospice of Eastern Maine, 885 Union St. Suite 220, Bangor, ME 04401 or to the Maine Veterans’ Home, B Unit Activities Fund, 44 Hogan Rd., Bangor, ME 04401.
