MONSON – Constance L. MacPherson, 91, wife of the late Donald L. MacPherson, died May 11, 2008, at a Greenville nursing home. She was born Jan. 13, 1917, in Bristol, N.H., the daughter of Thomas T. and Carrie (Brown) Goodwin. A 1938 graduate of Bates College and holder of the Bates Key, Mrs. “Mac,” as she was fondly known by her former students, was an active and dedicated teacher. She taught at Monson Academy, 1938-1946 and 1951-1969, over-seeing the senior class and its’ trip, the winter carnival ball, prom, directing all the plays and Dramatic Club, and overseeing the Monson Academy yearbook. When Monson Academy closed in 1969, Connie accompanied Monson students to Foxcroft Academy, where she taught until her retirement in 1977. Her involvement in education continued when she served as director on the SAD No. 68 school board, 1978-1986, as a member of the Foxcroft Academy Board of Trustees, 1991-1995 and as past president and treasurer of Piscataquis Retired Teachers Association. In 2007, Connie was honored with the Tillson D. Thomas Award for outstanding former faculty member of Foxcroft Academy. She was also a charter member of Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International and served as Alpha Psi Maine state president of Delta Kappa Gamma from 1979 to 1981. Connie was active in Monson United Church of Christ, serving as its first moderator from 1984 to 1988. She also served in Penobscot-Piscataquis Association of United Church of Christ. Her many community activities included serving on Monson’s Revitalization Committee in the early ’70s, the new Monson School Building Committee as chairperson, in 1979 and 1980, and Monson Free Public Library Board of Trustees from 1968 to 1997. In addition to her continued public service after retirement, she also especially enjoyed playing duplicate bridge in Greenville. She is survived by a daughter, Dawn MacPherson-Allen of Monson; two beloved grandchildren, Daina MacPherson Allen of Monson and Thomas Philip Allen and his wife, Holly, of Reading, Mass.; and a great-granddaughter, Ruby Rose Allen of Reading, Mass. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; and a sister, Helen I. Brown. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at Monson United Church of Christ. After the service, all are invited to share fellowship and refreshments in the Bray room at the church. Burial will be in the family lot at Abbot Village Cemetery.
