MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -USAF Lt. Col. Curville Whitney Cox, retired, 97, who was a native of Washington County, died Aug. 6, 2006, in Mechanicsville, Va. Mr. Cox was born in Edmunds and as a boy lived in Edmunds, Marion and Jonesboro. He graduated from high school in Jonesboro and later attended Thomas Business College, Waterville. Mr. Cox joined the Army in 1928 and was commissioned in 1933. He later was in the Air Force, serving 29 years in the military until his retirement at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1958. He was a veteran of World War II in the Pacific theatre and also a veteran of the Korean War. When he retired from the Air Force, Mr. Cox moved with his family to Hopedale, Mass., and became a real estate broker. He later operated his own business, C. Cox Realty, Holliston, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. Cox relocated to Mechanicsville, Va., in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth T. Cox; and two sons, John W. Cox of Amesbury, Mass., and Timothy D. Cox of Mechanicsville, Va.; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration remembering Curville will be held 11 a.m. Oct. 9, at the Jonesboro Union Church community building. Friends and family will have an opportunity to share brief remarks or an anecdote about Mr. Cox. A light lunch will be served afterward by the auxiliary.
