FREDERICTON, New Brunswick – D. Merle Smith, 87, died Sept. 3, 2007, at Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born May 8, 1920, in Doak Settlement, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Lord) McConnell. She lived in Waterville, New Brunswick, for four years after World War II and moved to Presque Isle in 1949, returning to Fredericton, New Brunswick, in 1977. Merle was an accountant and secretary. She was a member of Olivet Wesleyan Church, Marysville, New Bruns-wick, and while a member of Presque Isle Wesleyan Church, she served in various ministries. They included 20 years on the board of administration; 17 and one half years as Sunday school supervisor and director of seniors. One of Merle’s passions was music and she sang in the choir and King’s Daughters Quartet. She is survived by her children, Joanne Johnson of Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Wanda Prather of Easton, Nina Haywood and Eric, Muriel McGuire and Owen, Merle and Annabel Smith, Viola and Wally Lewis, Clara and Murray Bickford, Melvin and Faye Smith; numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Eugene McConnell of Jacksonville, New Brunswick; one sister, Donna Wallace of Lincoln, New Brunswick. She was predeceased by her husbands, James McIsaac and Edward J. Smith; children, Durrel Smith, Hartley Smith and Lillian Frost; brother, Alvah McConnell; sister, Leona Harvie; sons-in-law, Dale Johnson and Bryant Cum-mings; grandson, the Rev. Lyn-dall Frost; brother-in-law, Sterling Wallace; sister-in-law, Jean McConnell; and a very special childhood friend, Bill Hewitson. Resting with visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, New Brunswick. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Olivet Wesleyan Church, Mary-sville, New Brunswick, with the Rev. Tim Guptill officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tim Johnson. Interment will be held 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time Friday at Fairmount Cem-etery, Houlton Road, Presque Isle.
