GREEN LAKE – David Odell, 83, passed away April 3, 2005, at his home at Green Lake. He was born June 12, 1923, in Mill City, Pa., the son of Glendon and Mildred (Keith) Odell. After his graduation from Mill City High School in 1941, David went to college at the University of Pennsylvania. A year later he joined the Navy to fight in World War II. For almost four years he spent his time in the Pacific. Returning in 1946, he continued his education and received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Shortly thereafter he met his wife, Althea Smith. They were married on June 28, 1947, in Bangor. They moved to New York City where after a year of work, David again returned to college. This time he went to Cornell University where he received his master’s in business administration. In 1950, he was employed by the DuPont Company in Wilimington, Del. While living in Delaware he and his family enjoyed their summers at their vacation home in Avalon, N.J. David stayed with the DuPont Company until his retirement in 1978. David and Althea enjoyed many wonderful retirement years. They loved to play golf which is the reason for spending lots of winters in Florida. Summer was spent living in their home on Green Lake. They also had great adventures traveling to places like Austria, Alaska and New Zealand, not to mention spending many weeks in the Caribbean Islands snorkeling and fishing. They have visited foreign countries such as England, Norway, Spain and Mexico, and their love of water prompted them to take many cruises. David was always making friends as he traveled. Once their traveling schedule slowed David was active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Brewer. David was a trustee of the church for three years. He will be missed by friends far and wide, never forgotten for his good humor and generosity, always admired for his devotion and love for his wife and children. David is survived by his wife of 58 years, Althea Smith Odell; a son, Keith Odell and wife, Sally, their daughters, Lindsay, Lauren, and Leslie of Derry, N.H.; a daughter, Kathy Kreul and her husband, David, and her sons, William and Phillip, of Show Low, Ariz. David was predeceased by his only brother, Glendon T. Odell. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the First Congregational Church, 35 Church St., Brewer, with the Rev. Constance Chase-Wells, pastor, officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Church. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be given to either the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 35 Church St., Brewer, ME 04412 or to New Hope Hospice, Inc., P.O Box 757, Holden, ME 04429.
