PENOBSCOT – DAVID M. MERRIELL David M. Merriell, 88, died April 11, 2008, at Penob-scot Nursing Home. He was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Minneapolis, the son of Elmer and Alice (McCray) Merriell. After growing up in Cleveland, David graduated from Yale College and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He worked at Robert College, Istanbul, Turkey; UCSB, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as a professor of mathematics. He served in the Army during World War II in England and France. He later served in several organizations promoting peace, conservation of nature and the environment. Surviving are his son, Father Donald Juvenal Merriell of Toronto; his daughter, Carolyn Yoder and her husband, Peter Yoder, of Penobscot; three stepgrandchildren, five great-grandchildren; as well as nine nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Grace (Angel) Merriell; a sister and two brothers. A private memorial will be held in late April. His family wishes to thank the staff of Penobscot Nursing Home and Hancock County Home Care and Hospice, along with the volunteers of Hospice of Hancock County for their caring support.
