BANGOR and BREWER – Delia Lillian (LeGasse) Treat, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, after a short illness, at a Bangor hospital surrounded by her family. She was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Brewer, the daughter of Eugene and Anne B. LeGasse. She spent her youth in South Brewer, educated at St. Teresa’s School and later Brewer public schools. On June 1, 1946, she married Edward Treat and together they built their home on the Day Road in North Brewer where they lived together for nearly 35 years. There she created a loving home and environment to raise her children, where it was obvious that spending time with her family brought her the most pleasure. The family spent many summer and winter hours together at the family camps at Phillips Lake and also summers cruising on Penobscot Bay aboard the Oquasa. She and Edward also enjoyed trout fishing, camping and canoeing in Northern Maine. Delia “Lil” loved to crochet, knit, read and play cards and board games with her family. After Edward’s retirement, the couple enjoyed driving the roads of Maine, stopping for lunch or picnicking, but mostly taking in the scenery that was offered. “Lil” was a champion of tolerance long before it was a popular notion and she did her best to stress these values in how she conducted herself everyday. She found value in all people and treated everyone with equal dignity and respect no matter what their position was in life. She will sadly missed by her devoted husband of 59 years, Edward; her daughters, Patricia Gardiner and Barbara Elliott, both of Bangor; her son, Robert Treat and his wife, Peggy, of Winterport; her grandsons, Benjamin Treat and his wife, Anne-Marie Miller Treat, of Keene, N.H. and James Elliott III of Bangor; and her great-grandchildren, Rachel and Adam Miller Treat of Keene, N.H. They are forever grateful for the love, friendship and kindness that she always showed them and eternally proud of the dignity with which she faced each challenge. She is survived by a sister, Rose Stewart and her husband, Edgar, of Bucksport; by a brother, Joseph LeGasse and his wife, Sue, of Youngstown, N.Y. and by many nieces, nephews, their wives and children and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and eight siblings. Family and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, South Main Street, Brewer, with the Rev. Joel R. Cyr celebrant. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Warren Center for Speech and Communication, 175 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401 or the Bangor Humane Society, 693 B Mount Hope Ave., Bangor, ME 04401.
