CALAIS – Diane W. Cavanaugh, 42, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 30, 2006, at a Calais hospital after a five year battle with breast cancer. She was born Aug. 16, 1964, in Bar Harbor, a daughter of Donald and Helen Carter Wood. After winning state titles in cross-country, indoor track and outdoor track, Diane graduated from Mount Desert Island High School in 1982. She attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated from the University of Maine – Orono in 1987. She competed in track at both schools. She married Paul F. Cavanaugh II June 25, 1988. Mrs. Cavanaugh taught school in Barnard, Vt., for three years, while her husband attended law school. After his graduation, Diane took time off from teaching to raise her beloved children, Sean, Ryan, Meaghan and Kaitlan. Most recently she taught kindergarten and first grade at Woodland Elementary School, Baileyville. Her children and their accomplishments were her pride and joy. As much as they will miss her reflects how much love she gave them. Diane was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Calais and was a Girl Scout leader. Paul and Diane gratefully acknowledge the loving care she received from Dr. A. Merrill Garrett, CancerCare of Maine and Calais Regional Hospital during her final hours. They thank everyone for their comfort and support during this difficult time and especially those who nurtured her children while she was ill. Surviving besides her husband and children of Calais are her parents of Bar Harbor; a sister, Donna Wright and her husband, Jeff, of Pickens, S.C.; two brothers, Jim Wood and his wife, Jean, of Exeter, N.H., and Michael Wood and his wife, Iris, of Bucksport; and nieces and nephews, Billy, Bobby, Beth, Brianne, Michelle, Suzanne, Robert, Sandy and Tracy. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, at the Second Baptist Church, Calais, with Pastor Chris Stevens officiating. Interment will be in Bar Harbor at a later date.
