HAMPDEN and BREWER Donald A. Vachon, 71, died un-expectedly and peacefully Oct. 29, 2007, at his home in Hampden. He was born June 3, 1936, in South Brewer, the son of Arthur J. and Francis M. (Boyce) Vachon. Donald was a 1954 graduate of Brewer High School and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a 1962 graduate of Husson College with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. While at Husson College, Donald served as his class president, was captain of the varsity baseball team and co-captain of the varsity basketball team. He received several awards, including Outstanding Student Award, Coaches Cup, Nelson Degrass Award, the President’s Trophy and was inducted into the Husson Sports Hall of Fame. In 1968, Donald earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Maine at Orono. He taught business education for eight years at Belfast Area High School where he coached junior varsity basketball and varsity baseball, and also served as the athletic director. For 24 years, he was an instructor in business management at Eastern Maine Technical College, retiring in 1993. Donald held a journeyman electrician license and worked part-time as an electrician with Electrical Services. During his retirement, Donald enjoyed walking, attending musicals, baseball and basketball games, and doing odd jobs for friends, relatives and neighbors. He was awarded the Horatio Award for Neighborhood Service and received a Jefferson Award Certificate of Recognition. Donald was a communicant of St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor. He is survived by his special love of 27 years, Jane C. Gillette of Hampden; two sons, Ronald S. Vachon and his wife, Ronnette, of Orrington, and Todd D. Vachon of Bangor; two grandchildren, Nichole M. Long of Corinth and Daisy J. Randall of Orrington; two brothers, Robert A. Vachon and his wife, Nancy, of Orrington, and William J. Vachon and his wife, Rebecca, of Morrill; one sister, Marie H. Carrigan of Orrington; several nieces and nephews. Family and friends may visit 5-8 p.m. Friday at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin, pastor, celebrant. A reception for family and friends will be afterward. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
