MACHIAS and TRENTON, N.J. – E. Fred Holcombe, 90, went to be with the Lord, Oct. 25, 2007. He was born in Lambertville, N.J., to the late William Lester and Hilda Gertrude Holcombe. He was a resident of Trenton, N.J., until moving to Machias in 1992. Mr. Holcombe graduated from Trenton Central High School and began his career in banking as a bookkeeper at Trenton Banking Co. He worked many years as a trust officer, retiring from New Jersey National Bank after 49 years of service. Mr. Holcombe was a certified financial analyst, one of the first in New Jersey. He served in the U.S. Army stateside during World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Holcombe was a longtime member of St. Paul Methodist Church, Trenton and served variously as church treasurer, financial secretary and finance chair. He attended Whitneyville Congregational Church in recent years to worship and to listen to his wife, Christine, play the organ. In retirement, Mr. Holcombe enjoyed traveling, gardening and time spent at Fulton Lake, especially when family and friends visited. Mr. Holcombe is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Christine A. Holcombe; two sons, four daughters and a son-in-law, Ann H. Sharp and her husband, Phillip, of Newton, Mass., Judith H. Smith of Somerville, N.J., Linda J. Holcombe of Littleton, Mass., Spencer Keith Holcombe of Ewing, N.J., Jon N. Holcombe of Machias and Marion E. Holcombe of Ewing, N.J. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Marion H. Moessner, Richard K. Holcombe, Carl W. Holcombe and Glenn C. Holcombe. A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Whitneyville Congregational Church, Whitneyville, with Pastor Betty Duzen officiating. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be at Lambertville, N.J., at a later date.
