MACHIASPORT – Lillian Spencer Thompson, 97, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at a Machias healthcare facility. She was born June 15, 1907, in Kent, England, the daughter of Tom and Theresa Spencer. She lived through the bombing of England by the Germans in World War I, and she was a cook in the British Navy for five years during World War II. A job as a nanny brought her to the U.S. in 1945, after that she worked for years at Penn Wax in Philadelphia Pa., making candles and bows. In 1954, she married and moved to Machiasport. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, crafts and beano. She was the oldest member of the Congregational Church in Machiasport and a member of the Machiasport historical society. She was predeceased by her husband Carl Thompson. She is survived by her stepson Travis Thompson; and his wife, Carol, of Hancock; one granddaughter, Cathy Reynolds and her husband, Robert; two great-grandchildren, Justin Bowley, and Lelyned Bowley, both of Gorham. A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
