MILLINOCKET – Donald M. Johnson died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, surrounded by his family at his home. He was born Jan. 25, 1933, in Iroquis Falls, Ontario, the son of Clifford and Elizabeth (Soukup) Johnson. Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He then worked at Great Northern Paper Co., Millinocket, for 36 years and retired in 1986. On days off, he enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with his son, Bob, family vacations and spending time at camp with his family. After retiring, he spent many of his summer days at Nesowdnehunk Lake, where he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his retiree buddies. When at home, Don spent endless hours tinkering and repairing small engines. A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Don is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carolyn (Downs) Johnson of Millinocket; his son, Robert “Bob” and wife, Julie, of Millinocket; and his daughter, Lynne and husband, Paul Mackin, of Millinocket. He also leaves behind his four wonderful granddaughters, who were the apples of his eye, Katie and Jordan Mackin, and Jamie and Ashley Johnson, all of Millinocket. Other surviving family members include his sister-in-law, Corinne Johnson of Millinocket; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peg and John Donley, also of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother and father; as well as his brothers, Leslie and Clifford; and sister, Beverly Montgomery. A graveside service will be held at Millinocket Cemetery in the spring.
