OAKLAND – I am Doris A. Bemis. I was born April 28, 1910, in Topsfield, to Ruel G. Bean and Alma Roix, both now deceased. I was one of nine children, an older brother, Phillip; and younger siblings, Lewis, Wayne, Maurice, Jay, Claire, Avis and Dennis. I graduated as a registered nurse from Maine General Hospital in 1933. I married Charles L. Bemis, now deceased, Nov. 25, 1935, and we had two beautiful daughters, Claire Louise and Jean Lucille. I was also blessed with seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and recently, a great-great-grandson. Charles and I owned and operated Bemis’s Restaurant in Bingham from 1952 until 1968. During that time we met many, many people who remain close to my heart. I have lived long and well. I have drunk the wine of the good life. Though I have felt the pain of loss, each day has brought new meaning and joy thanks to so many wonderful friends and family members. I have loved and been loved by many. I must now say good-bye to you all as I have embarked upon my final homecoming and join so many of my friends and family who have gone before me. Please celebrate our time together and know that we will see one another again. Visiting hours for Doris, who passed away Dec. 30, 2005, will be 1-2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at Giberson Funeral Home, 18 River St., Bingham. A funeral service will follow 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will be later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Central Maine Recovery Group, 77 College Ave., Waterville, ME 04901.
