BANGOR – Dorothy Ann Hawkes, 79, wife of the late Donald K. Hawkes Sr., died March 13, 2007, at a local hospital. She was born Oct. 8, 1927, in Bangor, daughter of Leo K. and Dorothy O. (Richardson) Averill. Dorothy was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1945, and the University of Maine. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees in medical technology and was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was the secretary of the class of 1949 and wrote the Class notes for the University of Maine Alumni magazine. Dorothy was a lifelong and perhaps the longest-term, active member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor. She had fond memories of times spent at Hersey Retreat as a child, and later became a Hersey Retreat Board Trustee. Throughout the years, Dorothy served the church as treasurer, clerk, and council member. She also served on numerous committees, including the church’s archives/heritage committee. In addition, she was active in the A.U.W. Guild and volunteered at the soup kitchen. For 37 years, Dorothy was supervisor of blood transfusion services at Eastern Maine Medical Center, having earned the letters B.B., A.S.C.P.; Blood Bank, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and taught many medical technology students. She retired in 1995. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, watercolor painting, rug hooking, line-dancing, perennial gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren. She spent her summers at her cottage on Toddy Pond, Surry, where she graciously received a stream of visitors, both family and friends. Dorothy loved and was dearly loved by her family and friends. Surviving are three children, Donald K. Hawkes and his wife, Dr. Andrea Constantine Hawkes, of Portland, Blaine “Randy” Hawkes and his wife, Mary Bradley Hawkes, of Lee, N.H., and Lori A. Edwards and her husband, Michael Edwards, of Bangor; five grandchildren, Nicole A. Hawkes and her husband, Adrian Vasquez, of Los Angeles, Caitlin L. Edwards and Ian M. Edwards, both of Bangor, Claire N. Hawkes and Chloe D. Hawkes, both of Lee, N.H.; two sisters, Kathleen Morrill of Orrington and Jeanette Morrill of Bangor; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Roger and Richard Averill; and sisters, Helen LaCrosse and Ruth Guyton. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, 120 Park St., Bangor, with the Rev. J. Bradbury Mitchell, interim minister, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service Saturday in the Dorothy Memorial Hall. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 19, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
