PITTSFIELD – Dorothy B. Scott, 84, died peacefully Wednesday, April 9, 2008, surrounded by her loving family at Cedar Ridge Center. She was born March 27, 1924, in Athens, the daughter of John and Beatrice (Sidell) Foss. Dorothy graduated from Somerset Academy in 1941 and attended Skowhegan Commercial School from 1941 to 1942, from there she accepted a secretarial position at the Veterans Administration, Washington, D.C., during World War II. In 1946 she married James Scott Jr. and together they operated general stores in Athens. In 1971 Dorothy embarked on a new life for herself and accepted a secretarial position at Pineland Hospital, Pownal and was promoted to administrative secretary to the commissioner of mental health and retardation and retired from there in 1983. After retirement she also worked part-time for the University of Maine – Augusta. In 1984 she moved to Kissimmee, Fla., and would return to camp in Hartland during the summer months. She is survived by her daughter, Marlene Roach and her husband, William, of Athens; her granddaughter, Sonja McSweeney and her husband, Kevin, of Athens; two grandsons, Shad Roach and his wife, Noelle, of Pittsfield and Scott Roach and his wife, Michele, of Athens; her great-grandchildren, Amanda and Garrett McSweeney, Colby Roach, and Jonathan and Sarah Roach; a nephew, Peter Foss and his wife, Lisa; and a niece, Nicki Michonski and her husband, Bernie. She was predeceased by a brother, Wendall Foss in 1971; and a very special aunt, Gladys Worth in 2008. The family of Dorothy would like to express their gratefulness to those who cared for her during the latter years of her life. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Dorothy’s life at a later date.
