CAMDEN – Dorothy D. Wentworth, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill in Camden. Born in Marlow, England, Jan. 8, 1920, she was the daughter of Edgar Ernest and Elizabeth (Beilby) Dray. She was a 1938 graduate of Normal School in High Wycombe, England then completed secretarial studies at a finishing school. She began work as a shorthand/typist for an airplane factory. Dot and her sister, Helen, were air raid patrollers during World War II. Dorothy met Richard A. Wentworth, while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in England during the war. On July 10, 1943, they were married in High Wycombe, England and spent their honeymoon in Bournemouth, England. Dorothy arrived in the U.S. in January 1945 via ship, along with many other war brides and subsequently joined Richard in Columbus, Ohio for the remainder of his military service. When they returned to this area, they made their first home on the Belfast Road in Camden. Later, they moved to John Street where they lived for 33 years while raising their family, then relocated to Cobb Road. After their children were grown, Mrs. Wentworth went to work at the Sunrise Motor Court on Route 1 in Lincolnville Beach, then as a secretary at the National Fisherman in Camden retiring in the 1980’s. She attended the John Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wentworth loved travelling. She enjoyed visits to Australia, Arizona, and Nova Scotia, Hawaii, Niagara Falls, Prince Edward Island, and two return visits to her homeland of England. She was a very devoted mother, wife, and grandmother and was known for planning family picnics. While her children were growing up, their John Street home welcomed all of the neighborhood children. She learned to drive while her children were little, and then enjoyed taking them to their favorite swimming spots on hot summer evenings. Dorothy was a great cook. Fridays were her baking day and the family never lacked for delicious pies, cakes and cookies. She loved flower gardening (weeds didn’t stand a chance), kept her family supplied with knitted items of clothing and afghans, and her home was always open to family, friends and new acquaintances. She holds a very special place in the hearts of her daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, for always making them feel like family. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Richard A. Wentworth of Camden; five children, Brian Wentworth and his wife, Loretta, of Rockport, Derek Wentworth and his wife, Beverly, of Sanford, Barbara Forrest and her husband, Bill, of Lincolnville, Kathleen Wales and her husband, Mike, of Warren, and Colin Wentworth and his wife, Linda, of Rockland; one brother, Donald Dray of Sydney, Australia; one sister, Helen Wahl and family, of High-Wycombe, England; brother-in-law, Fred Holder and family, of Australia; six grandchildren, Julie Dutille of Rockport, Nathan Wentworth of Dayton, Lisa Holmes of Waldoboro, Jason Wentworth of Sanford, Kristen Shackelford of Appleton and Holly Gallant of Warren; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Holmes and Caleb Dutille; and two cousins, and many special friends.
