ORONO – James Laurence Tait died peacefully at 10 Frost Lane, Orono, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Ayr, Scotland, the son of David H. and Elspa I. (Brown) Tait. He entered the British Royal Navy in 1939, serving as 1st Lieutenant on the North Atlantic Convoy Corvette escort, H.M.S. Geranium for the duration of the war. After the war he obtained his law degree at the University of Glasgow. He then joined his family’s long established law firm in Ayr retiring to the west coast of Scotland in 1989. He is survived by his adoring wife of 64 years, Maude I. Tait; his brother-in-law, Harry Peddie, M.D. and his wife, Pamela; special nephew, Brian Peddie and his wife, Janice and their family of Edinburgh, Scotland; also by special nieces, Maudie Peddie Meekin, Audrey Peddie McCausland and Allen, Sylvia Peddie Stewart and family; and nephews, Christopher and Michael Peddie and their families in England; and surrogate nieces and nephews in Aroostook County. He was predeceased by his brother, Godfrey Tait; and his sister, Margaret (Tait) Banks. He will be sorely missed by all. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono with the Rev. Brian Nolder, pastor of the Pilgrim Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Bangor, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at 10 Frost Lane, Orono, immediately following the service.
