DEER ISLE – Dorothy Eaton, 90, daughter of Emma Bird Damon and Walter Linwood Eaton, died Sept. 24, 2004, at the Island Nursing Home on Deer Isle following a brief period of illness. Dorothy was born on Nov. 14, 1913 in Boston, Mass. She is predeceased by her sister, Genevieve Eaton; and is survived by sisters, Virginia Robson of Deer Isle, Emma Ruth Burke of Seattle; nephews, Robert Russell, James Russell, Richard Russell; niece Margaret Russell-Van Zandt; and her lifelong friend Ted Pickering of Deer Isle. Dorothy graduated from Deer Isle High School, attended teaching colleges in Castine and Gorham, and received her degree from the University of Maine at Orono. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 40 years. She loved cats, children, classical music, and bridge. For many years Dorothy volunteered as treasurer to the Deer Isle Congregational Church and also as pianist for the Sunday evening worship services at Deer Run. She and Ted cared for many homeless cats on the Island, seeing to their medical and emotional needs. A service of thanksgiving for her life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Deer Isle Congregational Church. Interment will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Deer Isle. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Chase-Emerson Memorial Library or the Congregational Church, both of Deer Isle. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington.
