OREGON – Dorothy Lois Carter Holmes died Oct. 31, 2006, lovingly surrounded by two of her children, five grandchildren and their spouses, at a Clackamas, Ore., hospital. She died of a sudden non-traumatic clot to her lung, which led to profound anoxic brain injury. She was born Sept. 23, 1923. Dotty was the daughter of Gladys and Harvey Carter; sister of Winifred Blum, David, Richard “Dick”; and her twin, Donald Carter. She earned an associates in art at Graceland College, Bachelor of Arts at Los Angeles State College and then earned a Masters of Art from Kansas State. She worked as a school teacher, social service worker and counselor. Dorothy was formerly married to Reed Holmes for 49 years. Together they had five children, David, Carol, Joy, Jewell and Lawrence. She will be missed by her children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren, their spouses and five great-grandchildren. She is remembered as a generous, feisty and loving woman of deep faith. She loved her church, Community of Christ, and her family. She was happiest when surrounded by both. Her prayers were unselfconsciously powerful and one felt in the presence of a loving God as she addressed her creator during family times of prayer. Visitation and viewing will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, with a funeral service 2:30 p.m. at Stone Church, 1012 West Lexington, Independence, Mo.
