STONINGTON – Dorothy Marie ‘Babe’ Bridges died peacefully surrounded by many close family members on June 9, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born July 6, 1920, in Stonington, the daughter of Pearl E. and Carrie M. (Williams) Hutchinson. She received her education in Stonington schools. On Jan. 13, 1941, she was married to Lawson G. Bridges of Swans Island. Mr. Bridges died in 1989. Immediately after their marriage the couple moved to the Torrington, Conn., area where Mr. Bridges was employed by Booth’s Foundry making castings. The family stayed until the last days of the war, before moving back to the Stonington, where Mr. Bridges continued in his earlier career in the fishing industry. They both provided for and nurtured the growing family, and he was a very successful fisherman. She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Raymond and her husband, Philip, of Rockwood, and their daughter, Catherine Chobot and her husband, Peter, of Northboro, Mass.; Margaret Bridges of Gatineau, Province of Quebec, Canada; and Linda Zanke of Stonington, and her three sons, Ryan Zanke and his wife, Renee, of Deer Isle, Jason Zanke and his wife, Lisa, of Stonington, and Dominic Zanke of Deer Isle. She is also survived by Keith Trundy and his wife, Kelly, and Cari Quiterio, all of Deer Isle; the children of her deceased daughter, Brenda Quiterio, Lawson Bridges III, Ruthanne Jackson and her husband, James, Denise Gardella and her husband, Daniel, William Bridges, John Bridges, and Andrew Bridges and his wife, Cindy, all of Connecticut; the children of her deceased son, Lawson Bridges Jr.; and many great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one daughter; her only son; a sister, Virginia Cole; a brother, Robert Hutchinson; and a grandson, Paul Bridges. During her early years in the Greenhead section of Stonington, where she was raised, she excelled as a swimmer and enjoyed playing with neighborhood friends in the water as well as ashore. Later she was a caregiver for the elderly, housekeeper for the neighbors, and friend to all. After her marriage, she became more adept at keeping house, painting and papering, and working in the shop. In addition she became a member of the Eastern Star soon after her husband became a Mason, continuing her membership until her death, and accompanying her husband on his travels for equipment. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 14, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Main St., Stonington, and will be officiated by the Rev. Harry Vickerson and attended by the Matrons of the Eastern Star. Interment will be at the Mt. Rest Cemetery, Burnt Cove, following the service. Visiting hours will be 3-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 13. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Island Nursing Home, Route 15, Deer Isle, ME 04627.
