SKOWHEGAN – Dorothy Sawyer MacMichael Shorey died Aug. 19, 2004, at the Cedar Ridge healthcare facility in Skowhegan. She was born March 28, 1914, in Jonesport, the daughter of John V. and Annie Morrison Sawyer. A graduate of Jonesport High School and the University of Maine, she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and active in the Maine Masque. She married Alfred MacMichael in 1937 and moved into their home on South Main Street in Pittsfield, where she lived for more than 60 years. During the Korean War, she was involved in the women’s defense organization in Pittsfield. She was a Girl Scout leader for several years, a member of the Abnaki Girl Scout Council, the Tuesday Club and a past president of The Arts Club. A member of the Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church in Jonesport, she attended the First Congregational Church in Pittsfield. In 1950, she married Donald H. Shorey who predeceased her. She traveled extensively throughout the United States and all over the world, including taking the maiden around-the-world trip on the Concorde in 1987. She was a volunteer at the Sebasticook Valley Hospital for many years. For the last two years, she has resided at the Redington Memorial Home in Skowhegan. Mrs. Shorey was also predeceased by her brother, Daniel J. Sawyer; and her sister, Frances S. Worcester. She is survived by her daughter, Ann S. MacMichael; son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Ellen H. MacMichael; nine grandchildren, Christopher E. MacMichael, Secha M. Rich, Dorothy M. Reed, Benjamin H. MacMichael, Frances A. MacMichael, James E. MacMichael, Rob D. MacMichael, Deborah E. MacMichael and Julie S. MacMichael; 12 great-grandchildren; her nephew and niece, John V. Sawyer and Judith S. White; and several great-nephews and greatnieces. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at The Federated Church in Skowhegan, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Jonesport. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, PO Box 249, Jonesport, ME 04649.
