ELLSWORTH – Dr. Richard W. Whitney, 76, died Oct. 10, 2005, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Richard was born March 19, 1929, in Ellsworth, the son of John Joseph and Marjorie Jellison Whitney. He graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1946, received a bachelors degree from Springfield College in 1953 and completed a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree from Tufts University in 1957, where he received the Periodontal Award. Richard Whitney practiced dentistry in Ellsworth for 44 years. His passion was his tractor and working on his land, which he farmed trees on for 40 years. Richard Whitney was an accomplished horse rider and a member of the Hancock County Riding Club. In recent years, he enjoyed going to the horse races all around the state of Maine. He also was a director for the YMCA, an active member of the Chamber of Commerce and trustee of Birdsacre for several years. In addition, Richard Whitney served on the Trust Committee for Union Trust Company for 34 years. He also belonged to the Hancock County Dental Association. Whitney Field has been Ellsworth’s cross-country race course for 31 years. One of his greatest personal accomplishments was challenging Bangor Hydro, with the assistance of an environmental attorney and subsequently winning his case to prevent a power line from being placed through his tree farm. Richard was predeceased by his mother and father, John J. and Marjorie J. Whitney; and his brother, John J. Whitney, Jr. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Whitney of Ellsworth; two children, Rebecca Whitney Kinney and her husband, Kurt Kinney, of Durham, N.C., Stewart Whitney and his wife, Tina Whitney, of Palatine, Ill.; three grandchildren, Grace and Caleb Kinney of Durham, N.C., Judson Whitney of Palatine, Ill. He is also survived by two nieces, Brenda Whitney of Lamoine and Susan Stantial of Bucksport; two nephews, John J. Whitney III of Lamoine and Brent Whitney of Eastbrook. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Whitney Field, by his farm pond in Ellsworth Falls.
