HERMON and ACAPULCO, Mexico – Duayne “D” Franklin Hayes, 58, died unexpectedly July 22, 2007, in Acapulco, Mexico, of natural causes. He was born March 17, 1949, in Bangor, the son of Vern Raymond Hayes and Marilyn (Fenlason) Higgins. Duayne graduated from Hermon High in 1967. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from June 1968 to October 1980. He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon W/Device, 1960; the Expert Badge with Auto Rifle Bar, and he eventually earned the rank of sergeant. Duayne served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a telecommunication specialist. He was a very proud veteran who lived his life truly understanding the meaning of “Sacrifice for Country” and “Blessings of Liberty.” Duayne attended diving school in California and became a professional diver, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Upon return-ing to Maine, he worked locally as a well driller. Duayne had many interests including music, boating, fishing, carpentry and learning. He was able to speak and write three languages, recite history dates and events, and tutor family members in math or science. Duayne will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Surviving in addition to his mother, Marilyn Higgins of Brewer, formerly of Hermon; are his children, Michael Shane Hayes of California and Meagan Hayes of Wilton; sisters, Doreen Alcott of Palm Beach Garden, Fla., Darlene Helms of Hampden, Rosanne Parrilla of Houston and Norma Jean Adams of Scarborough; brother, Thomas Higgins of Bangor; several nieces, nephews and cousins; also, two special people who were always on his mind and in his heart. Duayne was predeceased by his father, Vern Hayes; stepfather, Tom Higgins; and beloved brother, Raymond Hayes. A graveside service with military honors will be held 10 a.m Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Snows Corner Cemetery, Fuller Road, Hermon, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating.
