MADAWASKA – Earle W. Cowie, 82, died peacefully with his family at his side on Dec. 16, 2003, at Frenchville. He was born Sept. 25, 1921, in Portland, the son of John Isaac and Sadie (Astle) Cowie. He was a graduate of South Portland High School and a long time employee of Fraser Papers in Madawaska. Earle was a past Commander of the Thomas O. Cyr Post No. 147 of Madawaska and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2638 of Madawaska. A man of many talents, Earle was an artist who enjoyed painting and photography and worked as a cartoonist for the U.S. Army and the St. John Valley Times. Prior to his employment as an expeditor in the shipping department at Fraser Papers, Earle operated an Italian sandwich shop and a photography studio in Madawaska. For many years, he called the bingo games for the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, spending every Tuesday and Thursday evening with his many friends in the bingo halls. In addition to his parents, Earle was predeceased by his wife, Germaine (Bourgoin) Cowie and one brother, Tom Cowie of Gray. He will be greatly missed by his special friend, Cecile Chouinard and his four sons, Robert and his special friend, Gert, of Apache Junction, Ariz., Donald and his wife, Christine, David and his wife, June, and Mike and his wife, Jeannine, all of Madawaska; five grandchildren, Cindy Collins, Scott Cowie and his wife, Jenny, Jeff Cowie, TJ Cowie and Jon Cowie; three great-grandchildren, Kristin, Paige, and Michelle. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Friends and relatives may call 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the Daigle Funeral Home. Interment will be in the parish cemetery in the spring.
