CASTINE – Edgar Joseph Biggie Sr., 90, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at Penobscot Nursing Home in Penobscot. Edgar and his twin brother, Edward J., who died in 1917, were born May 16, 1916, in Lucernemines, Pa. to Anna Catherine Hollman and John Fred Biggie. He was the seventh of nine children; three girls and six boys. Ed’s years in Boy Scouts took him to Ithaca, N.Y. the summer after high school and led to his start with G.L.F., Grange League Federation, later becoming AGWAY. He met and married his wife, Isabelle in Greene, N.Y. She died in 2004. During his 40 years with the G.L.F./AGWAY, in many upstate New York locations, Ed moved from clerking in feed stores to managing feed stores, locker plants and co-op stores; then on to regional manager positions, advertising, research, and development, home and garden, and facility planning. Before retiring, he had been involved in church activities, was school board president, and served on a local bank board. Retirement allowed him time to pursue his interests in landscaping, gardening, painting, bird watching, and golf, as well as enjoying travel and times with family. He is survived by siblings, Irvin and wife, Anne, of Roswell, N.M., Raymond and wife, Eileen, of Erie, Pa.; children, Rosalie and husband, Michael McDermid, of Kelso, Wash., Edgar Biggie Jr. and wife, Louise, of Castine and Sharon Biggie of Castine; grandchildren, Edgar Biggie III and wife, Teresa, of Millersport, Ohio, Michael Biggie of Marina Del Rey, Calif., Therese Jennings of Castine, Mark McDermid and wife, Lisa, of Longview, Wash., Michelle and husband, Lewis Griffith, of Tacoma, Wash.; and nine great-grand-children, Joseph, Zach and Katherine Biggie, all of Millersport, Ohio, Nicholas and Sophia Jennings of Castine, Taylor and Castine McDermid of Longview, Wash. and Thomas and Lia Isabelle Griffith of Tacoma, Wash. A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, July 31, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Castine, with Fr. Richard Lembo celebrant. Interment will be in the Castine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Father Marc’s orphanage and mission in Haiti.
