OLD TOWN – Edith Huntley Merrill, 81, died peacefully Jan. 6, 2004, at a local hospital. She was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Rumford, a daughter of the late C. Ivan and Ruth (Jordan) Huntley. Edith graduated from Old Town High School in the 1939, and attended the University of Maine. On May 25, 1943, she married First Lieutenant Howard W. Merrill and they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They lived in Ohio, Colorado, and Maryland, and following her husband’s retirement in 1976, they traveled extensively, returning to Pushaw Lake in Old Town to live their retirement years. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and most recently at Orono Commons enjoyed regular games of beano. She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Constance Bennett and her husband, Ronald, of Scarborough; a son, Stephen Merrill and his wife, Lori, of Brewer; a daughter, Nancy Babcock and her husband, Henry, of Etna; three grandchildren, Edward Bennett of Gorham, Elizabeth Pritchard of Gorham, and David Weld Merrill of Fairbanks, Ala.; four great-grandchildren, Kate and Jessica Bennett, Samuel Pritchard, and Eli Weld Merrill. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Old Town United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ron Chaffee officiating. Spring interment will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town.
