LITTLE DEER ISLE – Edward Walton Hutchinson, 89, died peacefully in his sleep, Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. He was the son of Walter T. and Flossie (Eaton) Hutchinson. He graduated from Eggemoggin Grammar on Little Deer Isle in 1930 and from McKinley High School on Deer Isle in 1935. He was a seaman having started on yachts and then worked on ocean going merchant vessels. The last 25 years of his working career was spent on smaller craft based in the New York Harbor area. He was a master mariner and a licensed federal pilot for most of the inland waters between Eastport and Norfolk, Va. He was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II and the Korean War and held a commander’s rating in the U.S. Maritime Service. He was a member of Marine Lodge No. 122. Edward is survived by two sons, Edward J. Hutchinson of Connecticut and David L. Hutchinson and his wife, Margaret (Eaton) Hutchinson, of Deer Isle; two daughters, E. Jean Hutchinson of Blue Hill and Cathleen (Hutchinson) Shaver and her husband, Rick, of Connecticut; step-children, Bonnie (Eaton) McPike of Bangor, Elaine (Eaton) Booker of Rockport, James Eaton of Little Deer Isle and Glen Eaton of Georgetown; four grandchildren; and 11 stepgrand-children. He was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, Joyce Venghaus; his second wife, Dora Goodwin Eaton; and an infant daughter, Nancy Hutchinson. A celebration of Edward’s life will take place 1 p.m., Saturday, May 6, at Saunders Memorial Congregational Church in Little Deer Isle officiated by the Rev. Harald Smedal. Interment will follow at Forrest Hill Cemetery, Reach Road, Deer Isle. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to the Saunders Memorial Congregational Church, Little Deer Isle or to a charity of one’s choice.
