BANGOR – E. Louise Towle, the wife of the late Frederick D. Towle Sr., died peacefully in her sleep Aug. 13, 2008, at her home. She was born June 7, 1920, in Brightwood, Va., the daughter of Lelia Virginia (Weaver) and George Eddie Smith Jr. Louise graduated from Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Washington, D.C.; Catholic University; and the University of Maine School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., and as a psychiatric nurse in Washington, D.C., and Maine before retiring in 1991 as psychiatric nurse program coordinator at Bangor Mental Health Institute. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Bangor, where she was a founding member of the Cemetery Angels group, which does preservation work at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor. She also worked on the placing and dedication of a monument to mark the location of the city’s first Catholic cemetery at the corner of Buck Street and West Broadway. Louise was a member and past regent of Frances Dighton Williams Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; past state curator of Maine DAR; and past senior president of Moses Greenleaf Society, Children of the American Revolution. She researched and wrote the centennial booklet for Frances Dighton Williams Chapter, and this year published her genealogical work, “The Smiths of Madison County, Virginia, and Their Ancestors.” Louise was very proud of the two centuries of military service in her family, and was a member of the Military Officers Association of America. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Capt. Frederick D. Towle, U.S. Marine Corps, retired, in 1988; and her sister, Virginia Smith Moore, in 2005. She is survived by her brother, Oscar “Jack” Smith and wife, Gina; sister, Edna Baine Smith Meador of Richmond, Va.; four children and their families whom she adored, son, Joseph Towle and wife, Debra, of Chatham, Va., and their children, Christopher Towle, Patrick Towle, Jonathan Towle, Jason Miller; daughter, Pat Goodwin and husband, Dale, of Madison, N.H., and their son, Ronald Goodwin; daughter, Maggie Campbell and husband, Greg, of Hampden, and their children, Katherine Campbell, Gregory Campbell, William Campbell; and son, Fred and wife, Trish, of South Berwick, and their children, Parker Towle, Jackson Towle and Sophie Towle; and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Bangor, with the Rev. Timothy Nadeau, celebrant. Interment will be held immediately after the Mass at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, Bangor.
