BANGOR – Elmore Frederick Worsaa passed from this world on June 24, 2005, at the Maine Veterans’ Home. He was born July 3, 1920, in Newington, Conn., the son of Maurice Worsaa and Clara (Ostergren) Worsaa. He received his early education in the Manchester, Conn., School system and later attended the Aucoin School of Electronics in Chicago, Ill. For many years of his life, he was employed by Sears Roebuck as an electronics technician. He was also skilled in automotive repair. Elmore was a first-class amateur photographer, and his studies in black and white were especially striking. Elmore proudly served his country in World War II as a forward observer with an 81mm mortar group attached to the 1st battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Division. He was a multiply-decorated solder, having received the Purple Heart and the Naval Commendation as well as citations for meritorious conduct in connection with operations on Roi, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. Additionally, Elmore was awarded the Iwo Jima Survivors Medal of Uncommon Valor. Elmore is survived by his son, Paul J. Worsaa and wife, Sheila, of Bangor; his granddaughters, Pamela (Mrs. Donny) Moss and family of California and Valerie Lindsay and family of Orrington; one brother and sister-in-law, Maurice “Bud” and Ginger Worsaa of Florida; one sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Leonard Morello of Florida; several nieces and nephews. He had a special relationship with his nephew, Richard Peterson, of Connecticut; a fellow Marine who stood by him, supported him and loved him throughout his life. Elmore was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Helen (McNiven) Worsaa on October 14, 2004; his infant grandson, Todd Paul in 1974; his brother, Jerry; his sisters, Eunice and Gladys; his nephew, Danny Peterson, lost on the USS Scorpion. The role has been called and Elmore has answered. It is time to lay his burdens down. There will be no calling hours. A private service will be conducted for the family.
