ROCKLAND – Elsie C. Hupper, 85, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2007, at the Knox Center, Rockland. She was born April 11, 1922, in England, a daughter of Henri and Elsie Johnson Ranwez. She grew up in Paris. At the age of 13, she left school to help support her family by working in a local bakery. During World War II she met Clarence “Johnny” Hupper and they married after the war in 1948. They lived in Port Clyde. She worked at G.T.E. Sylvania, Waldoboro, the coat factory in Thomaston and at Port Clyde Fish Factory for 16 years. She was well known locally for her beautiful skills as a seamstress. She was also a wonderful cook. After her husband, “Johnny,” died in 1972, she took care of her mother after her stroke. Elsie continued to own and rent her husband’s wharf, “Johnny’s Wharf,” Port Clyde, until she sold it in 1997 and moved to Rockland. She married Harold L. Smith in 2002. She was a member of Naomi Chapter No. 25 Order of Eastern Star, Tenants Harbor. She was also very active with Port Clyde Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, Clarence “Johnny” Hupper; brother, Jean Ranwez; and brother-in-law, Denis Bobillot. She is survived by her husband, Harold L. Smith of Rockland; sister, Leontine Bobillot of Waldoboro; brother, Pierre Ranwez and his wife, Henriette, of Smyrna, Ga.; niece, Laurie Randolph and her husband, Ken, of Waldoboro; nephews, Alan Ranwez and his wife, Kathy, of Arvada, Colo., and Andre Ranwez of France; great-nieces, Danielle Randolph of Jefferson, Jennifer Ranwez of Washington, D.C., and Danielle Ranwez of Colorado; great-nephew, Nicholas Ranwez of Waldoboro; cousin, Walter Hupper and his family of Port Clyde; and several cousins in France. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, with prayers 6:15 p.m. at Hall & Bibber Funeral Home, 78 Main St., Thomaston. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hall & Bibber Funeral Home with Father Mark Reinhardt officiating. Burial will be after at Ridge Cemetery, St. George. Memorial contributions in Elsie’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall & Bibber Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Thomaston.
