MACHIAS – Emerson G. MacLauchlan, 100, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Down East Community Hospital in Machias. He was born Aug. 1, 1904, on Charles Street in Machias, the fourth and youngest son of George H. and Abbie (Stoddard) MacLauchlan. He attended Machias Memorial High School, but will best be remembered for his enduring Main Street presence. He opened a Gulf station on Main Street in 1926. In 1946, he switched to Socony Vacuum when he expanded his gas station to include the heating oil business. Eventually Socony Vacuum became Mobil Oil and E.G. remained active in business until his retirement in 1972. He joined the Masons in 1925, and was a lifetime member of the Masonic Order of Harwood Lodge No. 91, rising through the York and Scottish Rites to become a 32nd degree Mason. He also belonged to the Anah Shrine. He was predeceased by two wives, Kate in 1948, Irene in 2001; and a son-in-law, Garth Folsom, in 1980. He is survived by his daughter, Norma Folsom, of Monticello; and his son, Donald and wife, Sherry, of Davidsonville, Md.; four grand-children, Katherine Schaffer of Severna Park, Md., Kim Folsom of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Jeffrey MacLauchlan of Potomac, Md., Scott MacLauchlan of Antigua, Guatemala; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special daughter-in-law, Ruth Leubecker, of East Machias. He will be fondly missed by many who appreciated his sense of humor, his kindness and sharp attention to detail. At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing hours. A graveside service with John Sprague officiating will be announced at a later date to be held at the Longfellow Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
