BANGOR and FORT FAIRFIELD – Ernestine Littlefield Nightingale, 75, the wife of Herbert I. Nightingale, passed away Tuesday morning, May 31, 2005, at a Bangor nursing facility, following an extended illness. She was born Nov. 11, 1929, in Orono, the daughter of Ernest and Margaret Littlefield. She graduated from Old Town High School in 1949, was married to Herbert I. Nightingale Nov. 11, 1953 and was a communicant of the St. Denis Catholic Church for more than 50 years. Ernestine was an entrepreneur, having owned her own photography studio in Old Town as well as Ernestine’s Ladies Discount Shoes in Presque Isle. She also managed Noella’s Boutique in Fort Fairfield for several years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a stepdaughter and stepgrandson, Diana and Da’vee Nightingale, both passing in 1973. Mrs. Nightingale is survived by her husband of 51 years, Herbert I. Nightingale of Bangor; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Stephen and Katie Nightingale of Ellsworth, Timothy and Karla Nightingale of Brewer, Matthew and Susan Nightingale of Yarmouth; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth “Betty” and Terry Surrency of Augusta, Ga., Mary and Michael Campbell of Moultonboro, N.H.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Marguerette and Larry Capen of Richmond, Va., Rita and David Coffee of Southwest Harbor, Carol and Roy Klitch of Old Town; a sister-in-law, Betty Philbrick of Fort Fairfield; 11 grandchildren, Jonathan Nightingale of New Hartford, N.Y., Mallory and Griffin Nightingale of Ellsworth, Charles Carter IV of Orlando, Fla., Adam and Even Carter of Augusta, Ga., Natalie Nightingale of Brewer, Joshua and Ethan Nightingale of Yarmouth, Zachary Adams and Sare’ Campbell of Moultonboro, N.H.; two great-grandchildren, James and Caleb Carter of Augusta, Ga.; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Martha Humler of Potomac, Md. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2005, at Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. A vigil service will be conducted 7 p.m. by the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2005, at St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie celebrant. Interment will take place following the funeral mass at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who choose may contribute to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Maine Chapter, P.O. Box 8730, Portland, ME 04104, or the St. Denis Memorial Fund, 147 Main St., Fort Fairfield, ME 04742. Mass intentions would also be appreciated.
