HOULTON – Ervin E. Varney, 76, died May 13, 2004, at a local health-care facility. He was born Oct. 4, 1927, at Houlton, the son of Eben F. and Essie (Watson) Varney. Ervin was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as an oil burner technician for the Gentle & Colbath Oil Company for 18 years then the Dead River Fuel Co., for 25 years until his retirement. He had a great love for gardening, fishing and hunting. Ervin is survived by his wife, Margaret L. (Gilpatrick) Varney of Houlton; one son, Stephen E. Varney and his wife, Robin, of Linneus; two daughters, Beverly J. Kirk and her husband, Donnie, Nancy L. McMannus, all of Houlton; four grandchildren, Jason Gilpatrick and his wife, Tara, Gregory Dore, Regan Varney and Ryan Varney; three great-grand-children, Claire and Addie Gilpatrick, Sydney Varney; one brother, Hermon H. Varney of Canterbury, New Brunswick; one sister, Violet Fish of Woodstock, New Brunswick. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Dunn Funeral Home where funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. David Tuttle officiating. Interment will be in the Hodgdon Cemetery.
