DEER ISLE – Essie Haskell died Feb. 6, 2008, at Island Nursing Home. She was born Jan. 4, 1908, in Little Deer Isle, the daughter of Arthur and Myrtie (Howard) Billings. She attended Eggemoggin School, Little Deer Isle. In 1928 she married Benjamin F. “Bennie” Haskell. They made their first home in Rockland. Later they made their permanent home in Little Deer Isle. She was a member of R.L.D.S. Church, Community of Christ, and served as organist, choir member and Sunday school teacher. She worked for several years for Stonington Packing Co. Essie is survived by her sons, Milton and wife, Priscilla, of Deer Isle, Franklin and wife, Pauline, and Douglas and wife, Linda, of Little Deer Isle; daughter, Geraldine and husband, Theodore Turner, of Swans Island; and stepdaughter, Shirley Carville of Little Deer Isle. She leaves a sister, Jeanette Mitchell; sister-in-law, Lenora Billings; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-stepgrandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband in 1971; by sisters, Ramona Eaton, Sabrina Sellers, Alice Varisco and Rhoda Carter; brothers, Eugene Billings and Galen Billings; and grandchildren, Maryann Haskell and Franklin Haskell Jr. A private graveside service will be held at Gray’s Hill Cemetery, Little Deer Isle, in the spring.
