SCARBOROUGH – Estella Althea Moxcey, 92, formerly of Westbrook, went to join the Lord Monday, May 8, 2006, at Pine Point Center for Health Care. She was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Windham, the daughter of John C. and Josephine (Hanson) Nichols. She graduated from the Gorham Normal School. She earned her Masters Degree in math at the University of Maine. Estella was a teacher in the Westbrook school system for more than 30 years and was active in the church, and a devout Christian. Estella also taught school in Shapleigh, Windham, Gorham and retired from the Forest Street School in Westbrook. She was a member of the Eastern Star for many years and served as worthy matron and continued to attend past matron’s meetings. Besides her family, horses were her biggest love with which she won an award for endurance riding at the age of 72. She rode as a young girl and continued riding until she was 75 years old and won many ribbons in competitive trail riding on her Palomino, Merry-Go. She also participated in 100-mile endurance rides on her Arabian Gelding, Donajah. Estella was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Kenneth L. Moxcey; two sons, Dohn Nichols and William Hatch Jr.; brothers, George Nichols, Donald Nichols; and a sister, Emily N. Dow. Surviving is a son, Robert Scott Hatch and his wife, Susan, of South Portland; a daughter, Pamela Hatt and her husband, Leon, of Harrington; a daughter-in-law, Gayla Hatch of Hollis; a special niece, Genevieve True of Gorham; two special nephews, George Nichols of Windham and Kenneth Tarbox of Sebago; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 12, at Westbrook Warren Congregational Church, Main Street, Westbrook. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Gorham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Maine Alzheimer’s Association, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101.
