SKOWHEGAN – Ethel E. Smith, of 25 Lawton St., Skowhegan, passed peacefully in her own home on Oct. 21, 2003. Ethel was born Feb. 22, 1918, she will be remembered as “62 forever.” Ethel was born in Eagle Lake, to Fred and Mary Callahan. She married Perley Smith of Skowhegan, Oct. 27, 1947. Ethel and Perley were the proud parents of three daughters. In every job that Ethel was engaged she was extremely devoted. In her first years of employment, she spent 13 years as a telephone operator for New England Telephone. For over 30 years she was an Avon distributor in the Skowhegan area. Most proudly, for over 45 years, Ethel served as Matron and as a translator for the County of Somerset Superior Court. “Gimba” as she was affectionately known by all of her grandchildren will be forever remembered as a very special grandmother. Ethel is survived by daughter, Mary Andrews and husband, Rick, of Salem, Va., daughter, Patricia Downing and husband, Art, of Portland, daughter, Barbara Sprague and husband, Jeff, of Skowhegan; brother, Linwood Callahan of Eagle Lake, brother, Howard Callahan of Winslow and Bradenton, Fla.; sister-in-law, Carlene Foster of Skowhegan; grandchildren, Marc and Erin Babine, Kristen Luke, John Downing and Shanna Goodine, Kaitlyn and Drew Sprague. Ethel is also survived by a very special great-granddaughter, Hannah Lee Goodine of Portland; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends that she made along the way. She was predeceased by her husband, Perley in 1964 and a brother, Fred Callahan Jr. in 2001. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Smart and Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave, Skowhegan, Maine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, with Father Maurice Morin officiating.
