ETHEL (GEROW) STILWELL HOULTON – Ethel (Gerow) Stilwell, 75, joined her beloved son, Jamie, in eternity, Dec. 28, 2006. Ethel was born April 3, 1931, in Hodgdon, the daughter of Reginald and Hazel (Roaix) Gerow. She loved life and all people, especially the students which she came in contact with while working at Ricker College, in the public relations office, until it’s closing and at Hodgdon High School, in the library, until her retirement. All the students became one of “her students,” each one holding special meaning to her. Ethel always had an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, a little bit of advice to give or a small reward to dole out. An appreciation for the outdoors led her to enjoy gardening and flowers, which always seemed to bloom around her. Cooking was one of her other passions, where no recipe was necessary. Her final year was spent at Madigan Estates, where the nurses and aides also became known to her as “her friends, her students.” She will be sadly missed by her closest friend and sister, Leola of Houlton; her two sons and their spouses, Terry and Mary, of South Port, N.C., and Leigh and Jennifer Stilwell, of Houlton; along with several nieces, nephews and her many friends and former “students.” She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence; and brother, Laurel. At Ethel’s request there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Those who wish may donate in her memory to the Health Services Foundation at Houlton Regional Hospital or a charity of one’s choice, care of Bowers Funeral Home, P.O. Box 579, Houlton, ME 04730.
