STILLWATER – Ethel Louis Marquis, 86, went peacefully to be with the Lord, July 17, 2007. She was born March 22, 1921, in Stillwater, the daughter of Ora Thurston, Sr. and Bernice (Dow) Thurston. Ethel attended Old Town High School. She worked for many years as a kitchen manager and head chef at W.T. Grant. Ethel also dedicated time as a Girl Scout leader. She was known for designing and sewing dresses, and specialty cake decorating. Her elegant cakes were always given as gifts. Ethel found great joy in her family and she was especially proud of her grandchildren. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a kind and generous woman. Ethel is survived by her devoted daughter, Jean Parady Kelliher; foster daughter, June Stafford; special daughter-in-law, Janet Thurston; grandchildren, James and Kevin Kelliher, Terry Hill, Cheryl McNerney, Christina Hesseltine, Walter Thurston Jr., Mary Pelletier, and Tim Davis; 15 great-grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter; sister-in-law, Anna Thurston; nephews, Rod, Rick and Gary Thurston; nieces, Carole Ann Gardiner, Lois Elaine Madden and Kelly Verrengia; and many dear friends at Marsh Island apartments. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Eugene Marquis; daughter, Donna Marie Parady; son, Walter “Buddy” Thurston; brothers, Ora Thurston Jr., Lawrence Thurston, and Frank Thurston; nieces, Donna Lee Boutin and Brenda Louise Sibley; and nephew, Wesley Thurston. Friends may call 11 a.m. until the time of service 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. Interment will be after at Lawndale Cemetery. Ethel’s family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Marsh Island Apartments and Orono Commons. They cared for Ethel as family and their compassion was endless.
