STONINGTON and BREWER – Tillie left us peacefully Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005. She was born Sept. 21, 1911, in Deer Isle to Lulu and Frank Marshall. She was the eldest of four children. She attended the Shakespeare School and McKinley High School in Deer Isle, from which she graduated in 1929. After graduation she held various jobs in Deer Isle, Boston and Florida. In 1935, she married Alston Wheelden. Together, Tillie and Boney ventured to Maryland and Queens, N.Y. While in New York, she was a block mother during World War II. She was also very proud of getting her 300 pin in bowling. Returning to Maine, she assisted in the family business and made many trips to Bangor for supplies and music lessons with their daughter. She is survived by her daughter, Janice R. Cox of Brewer; three grandchildren, Deborah L. Cox of Gardiner, David M. Cox II of Frankfort, and Daniel M. Cox and his wife, Lynne, of Orrington; her beloved great-grandson, Daniel James, D.J. who shared her birthday, of Orrington; a sister-in-law, Frances Wheeldon of Deer Isle; a caring brother-in-law, Walter McKay of Brewer; a very special niece, Sally Ann McKay Denning of Bucksport, and many other nieces; nephews and cousins. Tillie was predeceased by her parents; husband; two brothers, Randell and Herbert Marshall; a sister, Carrie McKay; and son-in-law, David M. Cox Sr. At Tillie’s request, there will be no visiting hours. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Greenwood Cemetery, Oceanville, Stonington with Harry Vickerson officiating. Gifts in memory of Tillie may be sent to the Brewer Hometown Band, care of JoAnn Russum, Treasurer, 15 Shamrock Circle, Holden, ME 04429.
