ORRINGTON and SCARBOROUGH – Ethelyn (Rogers) Sawyer, 99, a resident of South Orrington for 64 years and wife of the late Alfred C. Sawyer, died June 8, 2004, hours prior to her 100th birthday, at the Gorham House, Gorham. She was born June 9, 1904, in Jonesport, the daughter of William E. and Cora Belle (Hall) Rogers. Ethelyn graduated from Jonesport High School in 1923 and was a 1925 graduate of the Washington State Normal School. She taught for several years in Washington County Schools. Surviving are one son, William Sawyer and his wife, Nancy, of Scarborough; a daughter, Mary Allan and her husband, Jon, of Burke, Va.; four grandchildren, Cindy Anderson of Portland, Stephen Sawyer and his wife, Evelyn, of Belmont, N.H., Susan Anderson and her husband, Mark, of Spotsylvania, Va. and Julie Allan of Charleston, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Kathy, Candy and Kurtis, Tina, Will, Eric and Faith. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Jerry Stone, pastor of Community of Christ, Ellsworth, officiating. A committal service with interment will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport. Those who wish to remember Ethelyn in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Shriners Children Hospital, care of Anah Shrine Center, P.O. Box 735, Bangor.
