NEWBURGH – Eugene Bernard Sparrow, 77, husband of Hilda M. (Robertson) Sparrow passed away April 15, 2007, at the Togus Veterans’ Administration Medical Center, Augusta. He was born Feb. 5, 1930, in Santa Barbara, Calif., the son of Fred R. and Bernardine (Koehler) Sparrow. Gene retired from the U.S. Air Force after 27 years of service. Enlisting at 14, he served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, which later became part of the U.S. Air Force and went on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Before moving to Newburgh, he had lived in California, Iowa, Texas, and New Mexico. Since moving to Maine, he worked as assistant manager at Pilots Grill Restaurant and was a former manager of the Penobscot Valley Country Club. Gene was the first selectman for the town of Newburgh for many years. He was a 32-degree Mason, member of Scottish Rite Bodies and the Shrine for 50 years. Gene is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hilda of Newburgh; three sons, Barry W. Greene, Charles F. Sparrow and Bernard R. Sparrow; one daughter, Linda L. Hubbard; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. A memorial service to celebrate Gene’s life will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating. Family and friends are invited to visit 1 p.m. until time of service at 2 p.m. After the memorial service, interment, with full military honors, will be at Brookside Cemetery, Newburgh.
