HERMON – Eugene “Gene” Byers, 75, died unexpectedly Jan. 4, 2008, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 5, 1932, in Greenville, son of Frank M. and Mildred A. (Tibbitts) Byers. Gene served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1960. He was employed by UPS, retiring after 25 years and was well known by UPS employees as “Papa Gene.” Gene was a member of Hermon Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his loving wife of 49 years, Glorilea (Jewett) Byers, are three children, Karen M. Reynolds and her husband, Rick, Kevan G. Byers and his wife, Cindy, and Dale E. Byers and his wife, Theresa, all of Hermon. Gene was known as papa to his eight loving grandchildren, Janelle, Darick, Devon, Ryan, Kyle, Eric, Clay and Griffin. Also surviving are two brothers, Ronald Byers and his wife, Gloria, of Brewer and Arnold Byers and his wife, Ann, of Hermon; a sister-in-law, Mary Byers of Hermon; an aunt, Betty Tibbitts of Millinocket; several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Richard K. Byers; and a special sister-in-law, Donalene Tapley. Gene will be fondly remembered by Glorilea’s family, Larry and Judy Jewett, Laughton and Kathe Jewett, Jackie and Clifford Overlock, Joanne Jewett, Jeannie Jewett and Lee, Colby and Gloria Tapley; and a special aunt, Mary Jewett. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Hermon Baptist Church with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor and the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will be after the service at the church. Spring interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hermon.
