PRESQUE ISLE – Eula Nightingale Sawyer, 78, passed away April 4, 2005, after a long battle recovering from heart surgery and then pneumonia at Cary Medical Center. She was born Sept. 30, 1926, in Mapleton, the daughter of Harold and Fannie (Gardiner) McPherson. She was a member of the Presque Isle VFW Auxiliary. Mrs. Sawyer did volunteer work at the hospital and the Area Agency on Aging. Her joy in life was cooking and entertaining her friends. She was an avid card player. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Sawyer of Presque Isle; a daughter, Barbara Rose of Presque Isle; three sons, Edwin Nightingale and his wife, Jean, of Mapleton, Richard Nightingale and his wife, Sharon, of Ashland, David Nightingale and his special friend, Kathie, of Palm Bay, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Clarissa Akerman and her husband, Richard, of Caribou, Ferne Wilson and her special friend, Richard Levesque, of Portage, Dollie Craig and her husband, Clayton, of Mapleton; a brother, Clayton McPherson and his wife, Jean, of Fruitland Park, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Robert Sawyer of Monson; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Lake of Houlton, Jackie Ellett of Kansas City, Mo.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Gerald Nightingale. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with the Rev. Roger Jewell officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service. Interment will be in South Side Cemetery later in the spring.
