BAR HARBOR – Eva Mae Cotter died Jan. 26, 2008, at her apartment at Birch Bay Retirement Center, Bar Harbor. She was born March 14, 1916, in Philadelphia, the only child of James and Eva McDowell. Married at age 23, Eva became a homemaker and a mother. She worked in a factory for several years and ended her working days as a head teller for Girard Trust Bank, Germantown, Pa. Retirement was spent living near her grandchildren in Northumberland, Pa., until her husband of 59 years died. She then moved to Maine, again to be near family. Eva enjoyed sewing and throughout the years created beautiful clothing and gifts for her family and friends. She loved to crochet. Her fine stitchery included everything from delicate doilies to beautiful bed coverings. Her eight grandchildren each received one of her heavy, warm and colorful bed spreads. Playing cards and solving crossword puzzles were favorite pastimes. An avid reader, she never missed a day of the newspaper and read many, many books, which she meticulously indexed and rated. With her quiet manner and positive attitude, she was an excellent listener and a calming influence to many. In addition to enjoying a good laugh, she provided wit and wisdom to all around her. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, George; and her son of 61 years, Robert. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Adams and husband, Jack, of Bernard; daughters-in-law, Eunice Cotter Schreck of Pennsylvania and Jan Newcomer of Illinois; grandchildren, Tim Cotter and wife, Alisa, of California, Sue Roskowski of California, Amy Gregory and husband, Ross, of Oklahoma, Alissa Grayson and husband, Kevin, of California; and stepgrandchildren, Rebecca Gervais and husband, Glen, of North Yarmouth, Kate Adams of Portland, Eben Adams and wife, Susan, of Portland, Peter Adams and wife, Nicole, of Colorado. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren and great-stepgrandchildren, Athena, Nathan, Cole, Bennett, Lauren, Alexa, Mitchell, Jordan, Garrett, Anika, Evan, Lila, Paige, Cullen and Sawyer. The family gives their sincerest thanks to all of the wonderful staff of Birch Bay, who gave her warm and loving care. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
