BANGOR – Evelyn (Rice) Grant, died July 1, 2006, at her home. She was born March 31, 1923, in Bangor, the daughter of Arthur and Amy (Martin) Rice. Her grandparents founded C.H. Rice Co. She was a graduate Bangor High School, Class of 1940, where she was very active in all aspects of school life, especially sports. Evelyn attended Stoneleigh Junior College and Emerson College. She began playing golf at the age of six and enjoyed an incredible golf career. She competed locally and nationally, winning many tournaments all over the United States and Canada. She won the 1st Alaska State Championship in 1959 and during the tournament was chased up a tree by a moose. She was honored later in her career to be inducted into both the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and the Maine Golf Hall of Fame. She was most proud of being a Girl Scout leader during her years in the Midwest and in the California desert at Edward’s Air Force Base. She taught and organized little theatre in the USO’s during the war years. Evelyn loved the outdoor life, fishing, hunting birds; just being in the woods. She competed in dog trials, running the dogs herself. Later in her life, she enjoyed the companionship of two schnauzers, Heidi, and for the past 14 years, Molly. With her late husband, Winslow Grant, she flew into the wilds of the eastern Arctic shores of the Hudson Bay, stayed with Eskimos and fished in uncharted waters. Her first husband, Ben Seitzinger, a fighter pilot, was missing in Korea. She was predeceased by her husband, Dana W. Brown, a phase one test pilot and the father of her two sons, Curtis and David Brown. She was also predeceased by her husband, Winslow V. Grant. Evelyn leaves her two sons; and two loves, her grandchildren, Ainsley Mariah Brown and Zoe Michaela Brown by David and Erin Brown; stepchildren, Don Arthur, Kay Marie and Vicki Lynn; and grandchildren, Phoebe Sweet and Sadie Redman by Kay and Ron Redman, and Hannah and Andrew Riley by Vicki and Kevin Riley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday July 13, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ohio Street, Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, presider.
