AUBURN – Evelyn W. Beale, 94, a resident of 93-A Shepley St., died Wednesday morning, April 30, 2008, unexpectedly at her residence. She was born June 21, 1913, in Bangor, the daughter of James R. and Cecilia (Kenney) Welch. She attended Bangor schools and was a 1929 graduate of Bangor High School. She continued her education at Bouve – Boston School of Physical Education graduating in 1933. She continued her graduate work at Simmons College, Boston. After her schooling, she became a physical education teacher in Brewer during the 1930s. She married John M. Beale, June 13, 1940, at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Bangor. She and her husband were very active in the Lewiston/Auburn community and were founding members of St. Philip’s Church. Evelyn served for many years on the board of directors of the local Girl Scout Council as head of the camp committee and Lewiston/Auburn YWCA Board of Directors, having been very instrumental in construction of the YWCA pool on East Avenue. She also served on the Lewiston/Auburn United Way Board of Directors and as a volunteer for Pathways. She loved the outdoors and her home was a central point of family Thanksgiving gatherings. She will always be remembered as a strong, religious person. Survivors include her husband, John M. Beale of Auburn; three sons, Stephen Beale and his wife, Laurie Gibson, of Durham, Thomas Beale and his wife, Jean, of Bangor, and Michael Beale and his wife, Kate, of Holden; two sisters, Barbara Wilson of Waterville and Suzanne Cole of Bangor; five grandchildren, Andrea, Martin, David, Moira and Jonathan Beale; and one great-grandson, Alexander Beale. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, James Beale; and two brothers, Edgar and Paul Welch. A Mass of Christian burial honoring Evelyn’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Church, Turner Street, Auburn. Graveside committal prayers after at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Friday only at the locally owned Dillingham & Son Memorial Chapel & Tribute Center, 62 Spring St., Auburn.
