BANGOR – Fern E. Clendenning, 87, wife of the late Douglas G. Clendenning, passed away April 26, 2008, at her Bangor home. She was born May 26, 1920, in Orono, the daughter of Aubrey and Mabel (Edgecomb) Merrill. Fern lived in Bangor nearly all of her life. She graduated from Bangor High School in 1938 and married Douglas Clendenning in 1942. She had many interests, knitting being her first love, and also enjoyed needlepoint, counted cross-stitch, crochet, gardening and sewing. She worked for Sealtest Corp., Bangor and Portland, in her early years, civil service at Dow Air Force Base and proprietor of Dairy Delite, a popular ice cream business she ran for 11 seasons. She is survived by two daughters, Judith E. Clendenning and Lana T. Webb; three grandchildren, Lani K. Naihe, Scott D. Webb and Adam L. Webb; three sisters, Miriam L. Froebel and her husband, Ralph, of Texas, Virginia Jordan of Cape Elizabeth and Betty A. Picard and her husband, James, of Bangor; sister-in-law, Rowena Clendenning of Hampden; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Kenny; her brother, George Merrill; and her sister-in-law, Shirley Wheeler. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, with Pastor Stan Griffin, of Exeter Cornerstone Baptist Church, officiating. Friends may call 10 a.m. until time of the service Tuesday. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
